Welcome newsletter

January 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 2!  We have had a very busy day establishing some routines and making new friends.

Students were given a diary today which is to be used to record information including some notices and any informal communication between school and home. When students bring their diary home each day could you please check it daily for notes. I would appreciate knowing days that your child goes to OSHC or is collected by someone else. It would be helpful if you wrote this information in the diary. If you do write a note in your child’s diary, please let them know as they need to put it on my chair at the front of the room in the morning. Emails are an effective way of communicating too.

Please send me an email with your child’s name in the subject so you can be added to our parent email list.

I will post a fortnightly newsletter on our class blog informing you of current learning and future needs. Please subscribe to our blog as this is the main way of communicating with parents.

More information about this at Acquaintance Night.

Your child’s first reader will be sent home on Fri week 2. A record of their home reading will need to be written into their diary daily by you or your child. Sight words will come home on Mon week 4.

Daily sharing will be: Monday – green, Tuesday – orange, Wednesday – red, Thursday – yellow, Friday – blue. Your child has been given a colour group – Blue, Red, Green, Yellow or Orange – for classroom organisation.

Sharing topics coming soon…

Students will be making covers for their schoolbooks. However, could you please cover their diary and sight word folder. Covering them with contact will help to keep them in good condition.

Over the first two weeks of this year we will be assessing students in a variety of curriculum areas including reading, writing, spelling and number. We will have a strong focus on social skills, teamwork and developing a positive class culture. This is an important part of the curriculum and sets the tone and expectations of the class for the rest of the year.

We have a mid-morning fruit / vegetable snack daily.  Please send along a healthy manageable snack (no processed snacks please), as well as recess and lunch. Your child will also need a water bottle for the classroom. (No juice or cordial please.)

Please be aware some children have nut allergies. We have a child with allergies to lemon seeds too. Lunch orders are available from the school canteen.

Your child will need to have a named hat, library bag, art shirt and old sock (to be used as a whiteboard eraser). We would appreciate each family donating a box of tissues or a pump of liquid soap for the class. A roll-on sunscreen in your child’s bag is a great idea too.

The door will open at 8.40am for you and your child to come in and get organised. The bell goes at 8.50. In the afternoon your child will be dismissed at 3.10pm. Our meeting place after school, will be under the verandah at eastern end of Mortlock. I am happy to chat after school, once the children are dismissed. (Tues. pm. we do have staff meeting at 3.30pm)

I love to have parents helping in our room. If you would like to hear reading or have some other area of interest, please let me know. We normally have parents listening to reading first thing in the morning for 15- 30 mins. depending on how long you would like to stay. I have a volunteer sign in book in our room. Please remember to sign in/out. It is a DECD requirement to have a DCSI clearance for excursions, camps and sports coaching. If interested apply now. The forms can be obtained from the office. CLG covers the cost for parents.

I look forward to a happy and rewarding year.
