Term 4 Weeks 8 and 9 News

English – We made cards for our buddies and families. The ones for our families look pretty spectacular! We had literacy Christmas rotations which we loved – we wrote about Santa in Australia in summer and what he should wear, word search, haiku and acrostic poems, a very challenging crossword, word challenges and reading of Christmas stories. Many of us typed up a story, procedure or information report in the computer room in Word trying out different fonts, colours and editing tools.

Maths – Problem solving activities were fun but challenging.

We have all learnt to sign and sing We wish you a merry Christmas. Hopefully your child will sing it to you over Christmas and teach you the sign language too!

Weeks 5 and 6  News

Jolly Grammar –  We have been looking at some tricky sounds, ture and ie (ee) as well as suffixes and using interesting words into our writing.

Writing – Haiku poems are a type of Japanese poem and consist of 3 lines, with 17 syllables. We have had a go at writing some. They are usually about nature.

Sight words – New sight words for spelling have come home in diaries this week.

Readers – All readers should be returned. No readers over the weekend. Please come in and help us check all our reader boxes for missing readers if you have time next week. Thanks in anticipation.

Library books – All library books must be returned on Monday, ready for stocktake.

Book boxes are almost empty. We want to keep reading for the next three weeks, so please send along a favourite book and some Christmas stories to share. All books need to be named please.

Maths –  As part of our topic on Fractions we are looking at dividing shapes and collections into equal parts – ½, ¼ and 1/8. We find dividing shapes into equal parts than collections of things. You could try this at home when sharing things amongst family members.

Health – We have talked about us all feeling safe all of the time and if we don’t that we need to talk to a trusted adult. We have revised our Network of trusted adults to include adults who will listen to us and help us with strategies to feel happy and safe again.

Term 4 Weeks 3 and 4 News

This will be brief as I am report writing tomorrow and I have put lots of photos of our learning onto the blog already.

Jolly Grammar – sounds ei and eigh as the ay sound

-dictionary meanings and suffix ing

 Maths – Finishing off our learning about multiplication and Chance. We have started a new topic about fractions. We are learning about halves, quarters and eighths. We need to be able to divide shapes and collections of tings into equal parts.

Writing – We have had the opportunity to do some free choice writing to demonstrate our skills. Mrs Hedger has done some more poetry writing with us too. In Literacy Rotations, we have read some poetry and recorded it onto the ipads.

History – We have heard another dreaming story and retold it in our own words and dot paintings. See photos on the blog. We looked at some old photos of CLG PS and talked about how some things have stayed the same and some things are now different. Please help your child prepare for their oral presentation.

Health – We have been talking about keeping ourselves safe and how to identify our body’s Early Warning Signs.

Digital Technology – We paired up and wrote a code for the Beebots. See photos on the blog.

Excursion next Thursday

We will be leaving school at 9am and are not able to wait for latecomers. We will be returning by the end of the school day. So children will need to bring recess, lunch and a water bottle, in their own small, NAMED backpack.

 Please dress your child, in school uniform, for the weather on the day. A hat is required and please ensure that they have their sunscreen put on at home prior to coming to school.

Term 4 Weeks 1 and 2

Jolly Grammar – We have explored other ways to make the sh sound, using ti and si . We have learned about contractions and prepositions. We found contractions lots of fun. We love finding these in books now!

Sight words – New spelling sight words will be coming home in diaries on Monday.

Maths – We have been looking at multiplication strategies through arrays, repeated addition and groups of. The children have helped me design and plan out my front garden using arrays. We have also done a smaller unit of work on chance, using the language of likely, unlikely, impossible, certain and even chance. All students Yr1-7 have done the PAT Maths test online over the past few weeks. We did our on Monday. The students were very resilient and all tried their best. We have the PAT Reading test next week.

Health – We started this topic by discussing “We all have a right to feel safe all of the time”. Our dog incursion fitted in perfectly with this. Early Warning Signs are important messages our body gives us if we are feeling unsafe, anxious or worried.

History – We have heard a couple of dreaming stories telling us about the Rainbow Serpent. We also heard a dreaming story from the Flinders Ranges area, from the Adnyamathanha people about how Ikara (Wilpena Pound) was formed. We have started wondering what our school was like when it was built in 1926………..

Digital Tech – After some free play with the Beebots, we have made our own coding to program the beebots. Next week we’ll try it out using the Beebots. We have also spent a bit of time on the lightbot,com website. Some children have been using this at home too which is awesome!

Excursion – Thanks to those who have signed, paid and returned the double sided medical form. Please return next week if not done so already.

Term 3 Weeks 9 and 10 News

Jolly Grammar – The air sound made with are and ear. We made posters about Spring in the air with Ms Keogh. In addition, we looked at using prefixes and the belonging apostrophe.

Maths – We worked with mass in week 9. This week we did some assessment tasks about measurement.

Writing – We have learnt lots about writing persuasive texts this term. This week we made a persuasive movie about eating healthy food. We also did more poetry writing with Mrs Hedger.

Spelling – Your child has new sight words in their diary to learn to spell over the holidays.

Sharing days will change again next term: Monday – red, Tuesday – yellow, Wednesday – blue, Thursday – green and Friday – orange. The topic for week one will be holiday happenings. Other topics will be sent out early next term.

Book Boxes – Please send along a different book from home for our book boxes next term.

Thanks to the wonderful support from families during the term such as reading, pencil sharpening, covering books, cutting out resources at home and helping whenever the need arises.

Next term we have a new student, Dakota, coming from Sydney to be in room 12.

Please return consent for pet incursion after holidays, if you havent already.

One term of Year Two to go……….

 

Term 3 Weeks 7 and 8 News

Jolly Grammar – We have looked at silent h and c in words. We have also been proofreading to include capitals, full stops, commas and spelling mistakes.

Maths – Continuing on with measurement, we have been exploring length.

Writing – Leading up to sports day, we have written a persuasive text about being a good sport.

SL Conferences – Lots of planning and role-play happened before our SLC. The students were able to talk about their learning confidently and enjoyed the opportunity to share with their families.

Health this week we completed our second online survey. Please send along a gold coin donation by Monday for our CSIRO lunch. The lunch is next Wednesday and we need to shop before then.

Sharing for the red group will be on Monday due to sports day.

Oxford Owl – If your child is reading a book from Oxford Owl or the Literacy Pro Library at home, please record this in their diary.

Sports Day tomorrow – Bring a sun safe hat, sunscreen, water bottle and good sportsmanship.

Friday week 9, I am on leave. Karen Hedger will be in for me.

SPORTS DAY

This note came home today with youngest in the family. We are getting excited about sports day ……

The forecast is for 25, so please have sunscreen applied before school. Your child will need to bring their own sunscreen to reapply at lunchtime too. No caps on the day. We need school hats or wide brim hats on all students too please.

News Term 3 Weeks 5 and 6

 

Wow, what a busy two weeks it has been!!

Jolly Grammar –  We have looked at ear and ey sounds. We have used conjunctions to make our sentences longer eg using words like and, so while and because. We have also looked at making words that end with a y into plurals. See if your child can explain when ies is used compared to just adding an s.

Spelling – The sun was shining on Thursday so we did our partner spelling tests outside. Your child should have a list of sight words in their diary to learn to spell.

Writing – We are still looking at Persuasive writing. We have been learning about the language of opinion, sequencing and cause and effect. Mr Bennallack came in on Wednesday and watched us have a go at writing our first independent persuasive writing. Our topic has “everyone should eat vegetables”. We did a great job! Mr B was impressed!! Some of us typed up our Persuasive writing and Mr B has hung them in his office.

Maths –  We have continued looking at measurement, with the focus on capacity and are this week. Check out our photos in the blog. We enjoyed a capacity lesson in the sandpit last week.

Digital Technology – Working with room 1, we talked about algorithms and tried to write a procedure for brushing our teeth. After watching a funny you tube clip, about exact instructions, we had a second go at writing our procedure with more specific, sequential steps.

Science, Health and Book Week photos have been placed on the blog over the past two weeks. We hope that you are enjoying the photos. Thanks to those people who have been adding comments. We love reading them J

To all our dads and grandads in room 12, we hope that your family spoils you on Sunday. We had another great turnout to our Father’s Breakfast.

Term 2 Weeks 3 and 4.

 

Jolly Grammar – We looked at the different ways to make the ou and or sounds. We also looked at using the verb ‘to be’ in the present and past tenses. Eg I am, I was, we are, we were etc. Tricky stuff!!

Writing – We are still finding out about persuasive/ exposition writing. The focus has been on for and against and the structure of this type of writing. We need to be able to justify our reasons.

Literacy Rotations – At the moment we are encouraging students to stop reading their books halfway through and predict the ending. It’s lots of fun. Try it at home……

Maths – For measurement we have been finding the area of different shapes. Ms Waye set us a problem to find out how many pavers she would need for her pergola and how much they would cost. This was an engaging challenge for us.

Science and Health – You have seen our fun experiments posted during the week. Thanks for your feedback on our learning.

Smart Start program from the Commonwealth Bank came to talk to use about spending, saving and investing our money.

Music is fun photos have been posted on our blog too!! What a busy fortnight!!

We loved hearing about everyone’s favourite books. We are looking forward to Book Week next week. On Wednesday we have author, Phil Cummings, visiting, Thursday Treasure Hunt performance $6 and dress up parade on Friday.
