Design Technology challenge

Today we attached  a cylinder to a piece of cardboard. To do this securely, we used the fringing technique,on the base of our cylinder.

We remembered that it’s important to cover our making, so that it looks real….. not like a toilet roll or biscuit box etc.

Don’t our creations look fabulous!!

Winter sports registrations are now open!

Parents can now register their students to play NetballFootballBasketball or Soccer in Terms 2 and 3.

More information about each sport and the registration details can be found in the attached PDF: https://newsletters.edublogs.org/files/2018/02/Afterschool-sports-info-WINTER-2018-1chwc5q-1ah1mbm.pdf

After school sports can’t happen without a huge amount of parent participation. Please consider if you can contribute by taking on a coaching, managing or coordinator role.

You can register online at: www.trybooking.com/TMFJ

Please be quick as registrations will close on Friday 9th March!

Sharing during week 6 ….

Many students are already talking, in class, about how they are preparing for their oral presentation about our Science topic – Watch it Grow. Your child needs to present something for about 3 minutes on how a living thing grows and changes over time eg life cycle of a plant or animal.

Each child will receive feedback from the class in the form of 2 stars and a wish. (2 things that they have done well and something to improve on for next time.) This is part of our oral language assessment for the term.

We are looking for things such as:

  • eye contact with audience
  • loud, clear voice
  • not too fast
  • expression to make talk interesting
  • not to hold paper, notes etc in front of face
  • be organised on your day
  • have something to show to

Assembly

Thanks to all of you who came to our assembly today. The children were very excited to have so many of you come along.

We did an amazing job! The speakers all did well with their lines and used the microphone confidently. Our song was the highlight….. But them the children who performed Charlotte’s Lunch were awesome. They independently worked on putting that story together and created the act themselves. This has been the motivation for many of them to start making and packing their own lunches.

Term 1 Weeks 3 and 4 news

Jolly Grammar – We have been learning about words with the silent b and w. Our focus in grammar has been alphabetical order and sentence structure. When writing, we have been careful about checking for a capital, full stop and one idea. We are going to start editing our own writing too.

Guided reading groups are up and running. I work with a small group each day on a reading strategy whilst the rest of the class do independent or partner reading. The class are managing this time so productively. 🙂

Maths – Our focus continues to be number. We have been becoming familiar with numbers on the 1-100 grid and using the language of – greater than , less, more, before after, in between, odd, even. We have been skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. On Thursday we played bingo with 3 digit numbers.

Problematised situations have challenged us with our mathematical thinking. Eg 64 people are coming to a meeting at CLG and need a slice of cake for recess. Each cake is sliced into16 slices. HM cakes does the canteen need to bake?

Sharing during week 3 was interesting. We learnt lots about each other. Thanks to those families who support their child with their presentation. Start preparation for week 6 sharing to do with our Science topic –Watch it grow.

Computer room – In year 2 we have our own username and password. Ms Rowe came and talked to us about safety with IT and keeping our passwords private.

Science – We have all thought of an inquiry question about living things and displayed them on our wonder wall. Come in and have a look. We have started investigating the life cycle of plants.

Design and Technology – Last week we covered a box with coloured paper and turned it into a model. We made a plan, created our modelled and then evaluated it. They looked awesome. We worked with a partner, from room 11, this week to build a chair out of newspaper for a small teddy to sit on. This was a tricky challenge. Please keep collecting toilet rolls and long, thin boxes like toothpaste or Nespresso pod boxes.

Assembly – We have spent a lot of time this week organizing our assembly. The children performing the short skit have done it all independently. We are certainly trying to demonstrate the Expert Learner quality of Independent in room 12. I hear many children are making and packing their own lunches!!

Parent jobs

  • Thanks to our awesome group of parents who are coming in to do reading in the mornings! It will be back to normal next week. Sorry for the interruptions this week due to assembly practices.
  • Thanks to HV mum for covering drawing books. We have WOW books to cover now too, if anyone can help out one morning or afternoon next week.

Enjoy the weekend.

Oxford sight words

Last night  your child came home with a sight word folder. These words are ones your child needs to become confident to read (not sound out). They have Started from the list that they finished on last year. It is important to revise previous lists as it’s common to forget words over the holidays.

Once your child confidently knows their list of ten words, they can put them on my chair, on their day. Mon green, Tues orange , Wed red, Thurs yellow and Fri blue group.
